Convert HEIC to JPG in Chrome on Android

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter in Chrome (Firefox and other Android browsers work too).
  2. Tap Choose photos and pick the HEIC files from your phone, from Files, Downloads or a gallery app.
  3. Keep JPG selected. Under Options you can lower the size or remove the location.
  4. Tap Download. One photo saves as a JPG; several come as one ZIP file, which the Files app can open.

The photos are converted on the phone itself, never uploaded. Phones have less memory than computers, so convert 50 to 100 photos at a time. If the page reloads during a batch, use a smaller group.

Can Android open HEIC files?

Often, yes. Google's Android developer documentation lists HEIF (.heic and .heif) decoding from Android 9, but marks it "device optional": each phone maker decides whether to include it. In practice:

  • Many recent phones show HEIC photos in their gallery app and in Google Photos.
  • Older or budget phones may show a blank thumbnail or say the file is not supported.
  • Being able to view a photo is not the same as being able to share it. An app or website you send it to may still reject HEIC.

If your phone will not show a HEIC file, open it in the HEIC viewer in Chrome, which reads it without relying on the phone's own support.

Google Photos and HEIC

Google Photos can show HEIC photos on most phones and backs them up as they are. We could not find an official Google setting that turns them into JPG on download, so do not count on Google Photos to convert them. Download the photos first, then convert them in the browser.

Why you got HEIC files on an Android phone

Usually because someone sent you iPhone photos as files, through email, a cloud link or a "send as document" option in a chat app. iPhones save HEIC by default. The sender can avoid it by switching their camera to Most Compatible: see HEIC to JPG on iPhone.

Some Samsung Galaxy phones can save HEIF photos too, with a camera setting called High efficiency pictures. Turn it off in the Camera settings (often under Advanced picture options) to save JPG instead. More on the format in What is a HEIC file? and HEIF to JPG.

Questions

How do I open a HEIC file on Android?

Try your gallery app or Google Photos first: many phones running Android 9 or later can show HEIC. If yours cannot, open it in the HEIC viewer in Chrome.

Do I need an app to convert HEIC to JPG on Android?

No. A browser converter works in Chrome with nothing to install.

Are my photos uploaded when I convert in Chrome?

No. They are converted on the phone, inside the browser tab. The page can only connect back to this website.

Can I convert many HEIC photos on Android at once?

Yes. Pick them all and download one ZIP. Keep batches to 50 to 100 photos so the phone does not run out of memory.

Does Google Photos convert HEIC to JPG?

We could not confirm an official setting for that. Download the photo, then convert it in the browser.
