How to convert HEIC to WebP
- Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Safari, and every browser on iPhone and iPad, cannot create WebP files.
- Choose your photos with the button above, or drag them onto the box.
- Check that WebP is selected. Under Options, set Quality and Max size. For web pages, 2048 or 1080 pixels is usually plenty.
- Download. One photo saves as a .webp file. Several come as one ZIP with the names kept.
Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs inside this browser tab, and the page is only allowed to talk to this website. To check, load the page, turn on Airplane Mode, and convert: it still works. How it works shows the full proof.
Why Safari cannot make WebP
Safari can show WebP images, but it cannot save them. The converter makes each file by drawing the photo and asking the browser to save it in the chosen format, and Safari only offers JPG and PNG for that. Every browser on iPhone and iPad uses Apple's Safari engine, so Chrome on an iPhone cannot make WebP either.
If you pick WebP in Safari, the converter tells you and suggests JPG. On a Mac or PC, open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. On an iPhone, use the HEIC to JPG converter instead: JPG works on every website.
WebP and photo details
WebP files made here do not carry the photo details (EXIF): no date taken, no camera, and no location. For website images that is often what you want, since it keeps files small and private. If you need the date taken kept, use HEIC to JPG or HEIC to PNG, which copy the details over.
| WebP from this converter | JPG from this converter | |
|---|---|---|
| Works on | Chrome, Edge, Firefox | Every browser |
| Date taken kept | No | Yes |
| Location | Never included | Kept, or removed if you choose |
| Best for | Website images | Sharing, email, forms, printing |
Good settings for website images
| Use | Max size | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Full-width photo on a page | 2048 px | 80 to 85 |
| Blog post or product photo | 1080 px | 80 |
| Small thumbnail | 1080 px, then resize in your site builder | 75 |
Smaller pictures load faster, especially on phones. WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8, and most modern site builders take them too.
Questions
Why does HEIC to WebP not work in Safari?
Safari can display WebP but cannot create WebP files, and every iPhone browser uses Safari's engine. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer, or choose JPG.
Does the WebP keep the date the photo was taken?
No. WebP files from this converter carry no photo details at all: no date, camera or location. Use JPG or PNG if you need the date kept.
Is WebP smaller than JPG?
For the same visual quality, WebP is usually smaller than JPG, which is why websites use it. The exact saving depends on the photo and the quality setting.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. They are converted in your browser tab and never sent to a server.
Can I convert many HEIC photos to WebP at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; they download as one ZIP with the names kept.
Can WordPress use WebP files?
Yes. WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8. Check your theme or host if an upload is refused.
