How to open a HEIC file online

  1. Choose a HEIC file with the button above, or drag it onto the box. Files ending in .heic, .heif and .hif all open.
  2. Look at the photo and its details. The viewer shows the picture the right way up, and lists what is saved inside the file.
  3. Save a copy if you need one: as JPG, PNG or PDF. If the photo has a location saved in it, you can also save a copy without the location.

Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs inside this browser tab, and the page is only allowed to talk to this website. To check, load the page, turn on Airplane Mode, and convert: it still works. How it works shows the full proof.

What the viewer shows you

Detail What it means
File The file name and how much space it takes
Size Width and height in pixels, and megapixels (MP). Most iPhones save 12 or 24 MP photos; some save 48 MP
Taken The date and time the photo was taken, with its time zone when the camera saved one
Camera and lens The phone or camera model, and which lens was used
Colour Whether the photo uses wide colour (Display P3, as iPhones shoot) or standard sRGB
Location The GPS position saved by the camera, or "None saved in this photo"

The location line surprises many people. iPhones save where a photo was taken if Location Services is on for the Camera. If you share the original file, anyone can read that position. Use Save without location, or the remove metadata tool for many photos.

HEIC viewer for Windows

Windows does not open HEIC photos out of the box on many PCs. The Photos app needs Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and the HEVC one is paid. This viewer needs none of that: it works in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on any Windows PC. See how to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows for every option.

On a Mac or iPhone, HEIC files open in Preview and Photos already. The viewer is still handy for checking a photo's details before you share it.

To open many photos and convert them all at once, use the HEIC to JPG converter instead.

Questions

How do I open a HEIC file without installing anything?

Open this page in any modern browser and choose the file. It opens in the tab, on your own device, with nothing to install and nothing uploaded.

Is my photo uploaded when I view it?

No. The file is read inside your browser tab. The page can only connect back to this website, and it keeps working with Airplane Mode on.

Can I see where a photo was taken?

Yes, if the camera saved a location. The viewer shows the GPS position, or says "None saved in this photo".

Can I open HEIC files on Windows 10 or 11 for free?

Yes, in this viewer, which works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. The Windows Photos app also opens them once the HEIF and HEVC extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store, but the HEVC extension costs a small fee.

Can I save the photo as a JPG after viewing it?

Yes. Use Save as JPG, or the PNG or PDF buttons. For many photos at once, use the HEIC to JPG converter.

Why does my HEIC file not open?

It may be damaged or only partly downloaded, often from iCloud. Open it in Photos on the iPhone or Mac first so it downloads in full, then copy it again.

On iPhone or iPad?

Convert right from the Photos app

The NoHEIC app adds "Convert" to the share sheet: select photos in Photos, tap Share, pick JPG, PNG or PDF. It keeps the date taken, so converted photos stay in order. No ads, no subscription: free for up to 25 photos at a time, $4.99 once for unlimited. Coming to the App Store soon.
