How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

To convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac, select the photos in Finder, right-click, and choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image, then JPEG. It is built into macOS Monterey and later, and works on any Mac, including a MacBook Air.

Updated

Way 1: Finder Quick Actions (fastest for many photos)

  1. In Finder, select one or more HEIC photos. Drag a box around them, or hold Command and click each one.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) the selection and choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image.
  3. Pick JPEG as the format and an image size: Small, Medium, Large or Actual Size. Choose Actual Size to keep full quality.
  4. Tick the box to keep the metadata if you want the date taken kept.
  5. Click Convert to JPEG. The JPGs are saved next to the originals, which are left as they were.

This needs macOS Monterey (version 12) or later. On older macOS, use Preview.

Way 2: Preview, File, Export

  1. Open the HEIC photo in Preview (double-click it, on most Macs).
  2. Choose File, Export.
  3. In the Format menu, choose JPEG. Move the Quality slider if you want a smaller file.
  4. Pick where to save it and click Save.

Preview can also export a batch: select several photos in the Preview sidebar, then choose File, Export Selected Images. It is a good choice when you want to set JPEG quality by hand.

Way 3: the Photos app

If the photos are in your Photos library, select them, then choose File, Export, Export [number] Photos. Set Photo Kind to JPEG, pick a quality, and click Export. Dragging a photo out of Photos onto the desktop can also give you a JPG copy, but this depends on your settings, so the Export menu is the reliable way.

Way 4: in your browser, with more options

The built-in tools are fine for a few photos. For larger jobs, or when a website has strict upload rules, the HEIC to JPG converter in Safari or Chrome gives you:

  • Fit under a size limit, like "max 2 MB", on every photo at once.
  • Remove location from every photo before sharing.
  • One ZIP download with the original names kept, from a whole folder: see bulk HEIC to JPG.
  • PNG or PDF output too, including one combined PDF: HEIC to PDF.

On our test Mac on 29 October 2026, Chrome converted a 12 megapixel iPhone-size HEIC in 0.8 seconds, a 48 megapixel one in 3.3 seconds, and a batch of twenty 12 megapixel photos in about 4.5 seconds. Phones are slower, but nothing waits in an upload queue. Nothing is uploaded: the photos are converted on your Mac.

Questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on a MacBook Air?

The same way as any Mac: select the photos in Finder, right-click, choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image, then JPEG. It needs macOS Monterey or later.

Why don't I see Convert Image in Quick Actions?

Your Mac may be on macOS Big Sur or earlier. Use Preview's File, Export instead, or the browser converter.

Does converting on a Mac keep the date taken?

Finder's Convert Image has a box to keep the metadata; tick it. Our browser converter keeps the date taken by default.

Can I convert hundreds of HEIC photos at once on a Mac?

Yes. Finder's Quick Action handles a large selection, and the bulk converter takes a whole folder and gives back one ZIP.

Can I make my iPhone send JPG to my Mac instead?

Yes. On the iPhone, Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible makes new photos JPG. See HEIC to JPG on iPhone.
