How to Convert JPG to HEIC
To convert JPG to HEIC, use a Mac: open the photo in Preview, choose File, Export, and pick HEIC. Web browsers cannot create HEIC files well, so this website does not offer it.
Why this website does not convert JPG to HEIC
To make a HEIC file, a program needs an HEVC encoder, the same kind of compression engine used for modern video. Web browsers do not include one for images, and a full encoder downloaded into the page would be large and slow on most devices. Rather than give you a poor result, we do not offer it here.
Converting the other way is easy in a browser, because reading HEIC is much simpler than writing it. That is what the HEIC to JPG converter does.
Convert JPG to HEIC on a Mac
With Preview (one photo at a time):
- Open the JPG, PNG or other image in Preview.
- Choose File, Export.
- In the Format menu, choose HEIC, and set the quality.
- Click Save.
With Finder (many photos at once, macOS Monterey or later):
- Select the images in Finder and right-click.
- Choose Quick Actions, Convert Image.
- Pick HEIF as the format and click Convert.
This works for JPEG, PNG and other images that Preview can open.
PDF to HEIC
A PDF is a document, not a photo. On a Mac, open it in Preview and use File, Export with the HEIC format to save a page as a photo.
Convert JPG to HEIC on iPhone
The NoHEIC iPhone app can save photos as HEIC with its Pro upgrade ($4.99 once, no subscription). It is coming to the App Store; see the iPhone app page. The free Shortcuts app also has a Convert Image action with a HEIF option.
Why convert JPG to HEIC?
Mainly to save space. Apple said at launch that HEIC photos take up to about half the storage of JPEG for the same quality. That can matter for a large photo archive on a full iPhone or a small cloud plan.
Converting a JPG to HEIC does not bring back detail. The JPG already lost some detail when it was saved, and HEIC keeps what is left in a smaller file. If you share photos often, JPG is still easier: almost every app and website accepts it. Read What is a HEIC file? for the trade-offs.

Can I convert JPG to HEIC online?
Not well. Browsers do not include the HEVC encoder that HEIC needs, so we do not offer it. Use Preview on a Mac, or an iPhone app.
How do I convert PNG to HEIC?
On a Mac, open the PNG in Preview, choose File, Export and pick HEIC. Finder's Convert Image Quick Action also works for many files at once.
Does JPG to HEIC improve quality?
No. It can make the file smaller, but it cannot add back detail the JPG already lost.
Why does this site not offer JPG to HEIC?
