How to compress HEIC photos

  1. Choose your photos with the button above, or drag them onto the box. You can add many at once.
  2. Set the limit. Fit under starts at 1 MB. Change it to 2 MB, 500 KB or another limit if your upload form asks for one. You can also set Max size to make the picture smaller in pixels.
  3. Download. One photo saves as a JPG. Several come as one ZIP file, and each photo keeps its name.

Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs inside this browser tab, and the page is only allowed to talk to this website. To check, load the page, turn on Airplane Mode, and convert: it still works. How it works shows the full proof.

Why the compressed file is a JPG

HEIC is already a tightly packed format, and web browsers cannot save new HEIC files. So the way to make a HEIC photo smaller in a browser is to save it as a JPG with a size limit. JPG also opens on every phone, computer and website, which is usually why people need a smaller file in the first place.

A plain JPG copy is not always smaller. We tested one real 12 megapixel iPhone photo on 29 October 2026: the HEIC was 2.25 MB, and a full-size JPG at quality 90 from this converter in Chrome was 2.4 MB. That is why this page starts with Fit under 1 MB switched on. With a limit set, the converter first lowers the JPG quality, then, only if it must, makes the picture smaller in pixels, until the file fits.

Which setting to use

You need Set this
An upload form that says "max 2 MB" or "max 1 MB" Fit under 2 MB or 1 MB
A very small file for a strict form Fit under 500 KB
Photos for email or a web page Max size 2048 px, with Fit under left at No limit or 1 MB
Photos to view on a phone or send in chat Max size 1080 px
The best quality you can get Fit under No limit and Quality 90 or above. Use the HEIC to JPG converter

The date taken, the camera details and the location stay in the JPG by default. Choose Remove location under Photo details if you are sending the photos to someone you do not know.

Questions

Can I compress a HEIC file and keep it as HEIC?

Not in a browser. Browsers can read HEIC but cannot save it, so the compressed copy is a JPG. JPG opens everywhere, which helps when the goal is an upload or an email.

How small can the files get?

The smallest limit is 500 KB. If lowering the quality is not enough, the converter makes the picture smaller in pixels until it fits. If a photo still cannot fit, the page tells you which one.

Will compressing make my photo look worse?

A little, the smaller you go. At 1 MB or 2 MB a 12 megapixel photo still looks good on a screen. At 500 KB the picture is made smaller, which is fine for forms and phones but not for large prints.

Are my photos uploaded to compress them?

No. The work happens inside your browser tab, and the page can only connect back to this website. Load the page, turn on Airplane Mode, and it still works.

Can I compress many HEIC photos at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and download them as one ZIP. On a phone, groups of 50 to 100 work best because phones have less memory.

Is the date taken kept?

Yes. The date taken is kept, so the photos still sort in the right order. Camera details and location are kept too unless you choose to remove them.

On iPhone or iPad?
